Bharathi School celebrated Pongal, the harvest festival, in a unique yet traditional manner on the 12th of January 2026 by transforming the school premises into a typical Tamil village buzzing with festivities. The students joining hands with the teachers grandly celebrated the culture, bravery, and compassion of the Tamil community. Grade 6 students created a commercial street named "Bharathi Sandhai", where they acted as vendors, managing a jewellery shop, utensil shop, clothing shop, vegetable shop, toy shop, and snack shop, giving a real-life experience of visiting a village fair during a festival. The celebration also included the Arts Festival, featuring all traditional forms of Tamil Nadu, such as Silambattam, Kummiyattam, Parai performance, Oyilattam, Karagattam, a devotional Kavadiyattam, and a Perunjalangai dance, celebrating the joy of a good harvest and community togetherness. In addition to the above, the vibrant Tamil folk dances, Mayilattam (peacock dance), Cow dance, and Puliyattam (tiger dance) were a feast for the eyes. Various traditional sports competitions, such as Tug of War, were held for students from Grades 1 to 8, and they enjoyed them with a festive spirit. The entire campus became a family as the students dressed in traditional attire, made pongal in a new pot, and chanted "Pongal-o-Pongal". This celebration, which brought our ancestors' arts and business practices to the present generation, will remain etched in students' memories.
The School has taken its name after Subramania Bharathi (popularly known as ‘Mahakavi Bharathi’) pioneer of modern Tamil poetry, a fiery independence activist, a remarkable social reformer, and a journalist. He is an archetype of revolutionary thinking, modern ideas, the invincible spirit of freedom and courage. Bharathi School is a quintessence of his tenets in letter and spirit.
